The Future Homes Standard – New Solar Panel Rules for New-Build Homes
Big news!
As of Friday the 6th of June 2025, The UK Government has confirmed that most new-build homes in England will soon come with solar panels as standard, as part of the new Future Homes Standard, being published this Autumn.
This isn’t just good news for the environment, it’s fantastic news for homeowners, the solar industry, and the UK’s energy future.

What Is the Future Homes Standard and how does it regulate solar panels on new build homes?
The Future Homes Standard is a major update to building regulations that focuses on:
-
Energy efficiency
-
Low-carbon heating
-
And now – solar power!
From 2026, all new homes will need to meet much tougher environmental standards and solar panels will become the default on the vast majority of them.
What Does This Mean for Homeowners?
If you’re planning to buy a new-build home in the next few years, here’s what this could mean for you:
- Cheaper energy bills
A typical home with solar panels could save around £530 per year – depending on your energy use and the energy price cap. The more electricity you use – the more you stand to save! Many of our solar customers benefit from energy bills reduced by a huge 80-90% over a 12 month period! - Low-carbon living from Day 1
Alongside solar, homes will also be fitted with energy-efficient features and low-carbon heating (like heat pumps), helping reduce your carbon footprint without lifting a finger. - Clean, green energy
Instead of relying on fossil fuels or imports, you’ll generate some of your own electricity from your roof.
What Does Future Homes Standard Mean for Builders and the Solar Industry?
The solar industry is about to get busier than ever.
With new-build developers soon required to fit solar panels by default, there will be a surge in demand for:
-
Solar panel installers
-
Clean tech suppliers
-
Energy efficiency experts
-
Trades who understand the new standards
- Wholesalers and suppliers stocking the essentials for each project
With around 200,000 new homes built each year in England, that’s a huge growth opportunity!
Why This Matters
The Government is finally recognising the power of solar energy as:
-
A money-saving solution for families
-
A job-creating boost for trades
-
A carbon-cutting move to fight climate change
It’s a win for people, the planet, and the economy.
Is Solar Mandatory on Every Home?
There will be exceptions for homes where solar isn’t practical, such as those heavily shaded by trees or other buildings, but for the vast majority, solar panel installations will be the new expected standard for new build homes.
“Families will now be able to power their lives with clean, renewable energy from the very first day in their new home.”
The future of UK energy is solar power – and the Future Homes Standard just made a huge leap towards that!
